States of Matter The major difference between solids, liquids, and gases. A substance having structural rigidity and a strong shape that is not easily changed is called a solid.  A free-flowing aqueous fluid having a volume but no permanent shape is called a liquid.  A gas is the state of a substance without any shape, but completely conforming to the shape of the container into which it is placed.  Solids have a certain shape and volume, while liquids have only a definite volume and no shape, and gases have neither shape nor volume.
